HOW CAN WE PREPARE  FOR HURRICANES OR TROPICAL STORMS?

The NWA is dedicated to keeping citizens prepared and safe in the event of a hurricane or tropical storm. As such here are some steps to take and tips to follow to stay safe in a hurricane or tropical storm.

Gather emergency supplies

 In preparation for a hurricane or tropical storm prepare the following:

  • An emergency food and water supply.

  • An emergency supply of vital medication.

  • Emergency power sources such as flashlights

  • Safety and personal items.

  • Medical documents, passports, and personal identification.

  • A fire extinguisher.

Prepare your family and pets

  • Go over your emergency plan with your family.

  • Keep checking for updates about the storm.

  • Put pets in a safe place.

  • Call the hospital or the police about special needs ahead of time

Be ready to move efficiently

  • Keep your emergency supply kit in a place you can easily access.

  • If possible unplug all appliances, turn off gas, electricity, and water

  • Follow the roads recommended by emergency workers even if there’s traffic.

Make a plan

  • Write down emergency phone numbers and keep them nearby at all times.

  • Prepare an emergency supply kit with only the absolute necessities.

  • Locate the nearest shelter and different routes that can be taken to get there in case of roadblocks.
